Miss Yang and Mis s Hong, who are well experienced in thi s type of b usiness , are used to accepting propo sitions from customers. But Se-young, w ho is dat ing a colleg e student named Min- su, r ejects all requests for sexual favo rs. When Min-su pro fesses to having problems with his t uition and finan ces, Se-young reassures him that she will procur e the necessary funds fo r him. When the bar's clientele begin s to dwindle because of Se-young, Ji-suk reprimands her severely. Se-young develops a clo se relations hip with a Captain Pak a nd even allo ws him to sleep with her. She asks Captain Pak to f ind Min-su employmen t on a boat, but when Min-su comes to Sokcho for his new job, he sees how Se-young has b een maki ng her living. Sh ocked, he t urns his bac k on the job and leav es. When he eventua lly returns to Sokcho, he scath ingly den ounces S e-yo ung's morality and sever s their re lations hip. Decades ago, Ji -suk had stumbled into t he bar business in a despera te effort to su pport her husb and, who was serving time in prison; she la ter left him volunt arily out of sham e and moral degrada tion. Concerned th at Se-young will end up with the same fate, Ji-suk asks Min-s u to me et wit h her. She begs him not to abandon Se-young, but he flatly refuses .
