This is in itself an i dea that mak es you s it up and jolt, but as the narra tive develops, it continues not necessarily along a linear path but in several confus ing and fascina ting directions: the famil y's history, (detailed effectively in chil ling flas hback during a n improvised seance) is a chequered one, and has suffered at least on e major relo cation and upheaval in the last ten years. At the crux, however, it 's the depic tion of socialal changes th at m ake I Sta rt Counting so fascinating and elevat e it s language f ar beyond the confines of the standard h orror fi lm. The major subtext - that t eenage girls wer e maturin g more quick ly than before, and developing full sexual a nd romant ic appeti tes (even if in thou ght ra ther than deed) but were not posses sed of eno ugh discre tion to make the right choices- was a step forward for a genre in which its young females had previously been portrayed as bimbo victims ( Cover Girl Killer and The Night Caller sp ring to mind ), but not one that all viewers would nec essarily agree with. But most striking of all, and possibly the most e nduring image which the viewer wil l take away with them, is of the mast erful symbolism with which director Greene in vests every shot. Every inch o f the Kin ch famil y's world- their hou se, their walls, their TV, Agutters underwear, bed room fur niture and toys, Sutcliffe39;s clothes, Marshalls van, the local C atholic church, the ir town centre, their record shop) - is painted a bright, scintillating white- a wh ite which, by infe rence, is slowly becoming smudged and corrupted with th e dirt of the ou tside wor ld. White also symbolises, of c ourse, p urity and i nnocence (two q ualities Cat holic school girls are supposed to hold dear), a nd it is into this w orld of innocen ce that the e ver-pre sent red bus (a symbol of vio lation and penetrati on), condu cted by the lecher ous yet similarly juven ile Simon Ward, makes regu lar journeys . The allegory is f urther expanded in one scene whe re A gutter believes she see s the Ch rist figure in church weep ing b lood: by the time we acknowledge it, its gone, b ut the seed has already been pl anted. Rarely in a g enre produc tion has the use of colou r and backgr ound been so important or effective in creat ing a uniformity of mood. I Start Counting is as near-perfect an end to a decade as one could hope for, and exactly the kind of fi lm people should be making now- which is, of cour se, exactly why they never will.
