Agents for the other small nation in the conflict deci de to set th e ship adrift th at sam e night. When Betsy's fat her c hecks up on the ship, he is captu red a nd tied up by the sabote urs. Betsy hears his c ry for he lp and boards the ship to look for him, just b efore it is cu t loose. The Na vigator drifts ou t into the Pacific O cean. The two unwitting passenge rs eventu ally find each othe r. At first, they ha ve great difficult y look ing after th emselves, but adapt after a few weeks. At one point, they sight a navy ship and hoist a b rightly-colored flag, not realizi ng it signals that the ship is under quarantine. As a result , the oth er vessel t urns away. Finally, the ship grounds i tself near an i nhabited tropical is land and spring s a leak. While Ro llo dons a deep sea diving suit and submerges to patch the hole, the black nati ves canoe out and take Betsy ca ptive. When Rollo emerges from the oce an, the nati ves are scared off, enabl ing him to r escue Bets y an d take her b ack to the ship. The natives return and try to b oard the shi p. After a fierc e strugg le, Rollo and Betsy try to e scap e in a smal l dinghy. It starts to sink, and the natives swiftly overt ake them i n their can oes.
